I have had my 20GB Neuros for about two years.  Here is what's going on.

1. It will not charge, unless I pull down on the cord.  The charging number goes from 328 up to 404 when I do this.  I can leave it this way for hours, but it will not charge, it will merely stay lit.  If I plug it in with car charger and stay in a Zen-like position, with the Neuros on my leg, charger pulling down, it will run, but if it moves from this position, it shuts off.

2. Occasionally, the Neuros, when it did charge, would turn on by itself, with no exterior pressure on the buttons and no power source.  So, if I come back to my car after work, the Neuros is drained.

3. When it runs, I run a cable from the headphone jack to an auxiliary input on my car stereo.  It will not play through both speakers, unless I tap the cable where it connects to the Neuros.  If I stay in my Zen-like position (I have an automatic) it will play through both speakers.  If I move, one channel oh no channels come through.  Broadcasting through the radio is somewhat faint and since I listen to a lot of spoken word, some of it rather old, I prefer the aux. hookup.

I don't know the life expectancy on my Neuros I, but when it works, I like the little guy.  It's getting harder to find mp3 players that have hard drives, line-in jacks and record to mp3.  However, I have to say that this unit has not lived up to my expectations.  I had to send it away for warranty repair (it wouldn't charge) and it came back OK, but since then, it has degenerated (it won't charge, plus...).  The unit has not been dropped or jostled any more than walking about and road bumps on the passenger seat.

Since it is well out of warranty, it would cost to have it fixed again.  Do I need to find one of my solder-happy friends to make my Neuros whole again or is it time to get another unit?

Two more semi-related questions:

1. Does anyone else have a Neuros I and is it plugging along nicely?

2. Why is it getting harder to find HD players that record?  Some have teeny drives, others, like the iRiver h10, record, but you must buy a dock (Chico Marx, phone your service).

I still have both a Neuros I and a Neuros II.  Both are happy at this time.  The Neuros I is used daily by my wife at work, and is almost always plugged in.  On our last road trip, the battery (unplugged) lasted for 5 hours.

Well, I didn't really answer your questions, Blessed B, but the units have lasted a long time for us.  I now use a Creative Zen (1 gig) that records to MP3 for school lectures and voice recording because of the smaller size.

Thanks for your input!  I looked at Creative, but that 1 GB capacity doesn't do it for me.

sounds like you need a new battery.  you can find them on ebay...search for: "neuros battery".  it'll be about $20 with shipping.  and there is a link on the forum to a site with instructions on how to take apart the hard drive pack to replace the battery.

since it's out of warranty, you've nothing to lose.

Thank you. Replacing the battery is easy; I have done it before, but the problem is not the battery.  The problem is that the charger will not sit snugly, unless I put it in at a certain angle, which is why I put it in for repair.

The unit turns on unexpectedly during the day, which drains the battery.
