What exactly are the compression codecs and settings which the R2 records?

I would like to edit my footage in Apple's Final Cut Pro, but cannot seem to work with the video without very long rendering processes.  I've tried several project settings/codecs, but continue to come up empty handed!  My goal is to edit the clips I've captured with minimal loss to image quality.  I think many would be interested, or dare I say "impressed", with the R2's high quality settings if we could actually take control of the data without having to convert the files into a different (and less efficient) format.  I have been working on a project that I'd like to share with the community, but I'm currently at this stumbling block.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I use Premiere Pro 2  which cannot read mp4 files so I had to convert to avi using mp4cam2avi.

As far as I can tell the conversion is lossless as the information is just repackaged in a new "container". The new files work well in Premiere which is at its happiest when dealing with avi's. Rendering time is (I think) comparable to an avi created from my DV cam.

I know you said that you did not want to convert the files but it really does not take a great deal of time. The above software is free which is a bonus and I presume there is an equivalent for the Mac.

I've been doing some research into the editing of mp4 files so my information is hearsay & speculative.  What I've gathered is that QuickTime 7.x PRO can let you do some basic editing (like chopping out commercials) and when you are done, choose EXPORT (not SAVE) as well as choose PassThrough options in wizards afterwards.  This, my understanding goes, will keep conversion routines out of the process.  I would appreciate it if someone that has QuickTime 7 PRO to verify this information.  Thank you.

You can use squared5's mpeg streamclip. it is supposed to do a great job if you want to trimm files or piece files together.

Thanks for the heads up on squared5's mpeg streamclip, FJ!  I downloaded it and it really does a great job for simple clipping of videos.  Just want the doctor ordered  :D

mpeg streamclip delivers the simple clipping but don't expect to play back the editted mp4 file from the r2.  the audio/video will not be synchronized.  the editted file will play back within the mpeg streamclip just fine.  and there does appear to be a slight out-of-sync when using freeware QT 7 for play back.  i've tried all the "fix stream" options in the software to no avail.

Nero Vision (part of the Nero CD/DVD burning software package) handles MP4 natively with no problem.

I tried to use this software but ran into two issues. 

One after conversion I can use windows movie maker but Pinnical Movie Studio 9 will not edit the file.  Because the file is still a mpg 4 file just Divx according to GSpot.

Two I cannot get the audio to sync.

I do not use this software but have just had a look at the Pinnacle website, have you applied all the patches ?.

Read the "fix" list for the latest patch, it mentions added support for DivX, Mpeg-4 as well as audio sync issues etc.

You may also consider an upgrade to V10
