The problem way back was "chirping" during MyFi. How often does your music skip. When you reformat and rebuild your Neuros, does it have any effect?

Hi All,

There used to be a problem with this with the Neuros I units. On the Neuros units ogg 6 should play fine. Maybe at q10 you'll have a little chirping through NeuroCast, but not much. If you are having sound problems on a NII unit, look into it as a support issue. It's no longer a widespread thing, I actually haven't heard about this in a long time.

One thing I wanted to post as a general note:

I use my recorder every day, doing lots of database changes, delete from PC, add to MyMix, lots of recordings.

After some time, a few weeks or so, there can start to be some errors and crashes. I thought my hard drive was getting beat up, but I reformatted the hard drive and reloaded my music and everything has been fine.

So for you, and anyone who is having lockup issues, you may want to give this a shot.

You ask some difficult questions.

What we really need, and I hope for, it recording recovery. But until that happens, here are my suggestions.

2.16 is just better firmware than anything else, for a lot of reasons. We continue to work out all kinds of bugs, problems from 1.45 and other versions.

But that said, here are some thoughts on how to record with minimum risk. You can try this and just do some tests at home to see if it really works for you.

If not, we should work on the issue in other ways, maybe your hard drive has a problem.

I wouldn't recommend this for everyone, but just you for your circumstances.

1. Load the new firmware.

2. At some point, reformat your Neuros hard drive and re-load your music. Don't load it all the way full, or even close.

See, when you make a big, long recording, the data goes to the space on the hard drive that's available, and that can be in different locations on the hard drive disk - wherever there is room. So if you reformat and rebuild, all the music will be placed neatly on your hard drive, and the free space will all be together.

if that doesn't make sense, i can explain offline.

3. Make a recording. Whatever length- you absolutely, postively, should not crash.

4. Sync as often as you can, and get the recordings to your PC for safekeeping.

5. Then (and here's the radical part) reformat your NAND before big important recordings.

Press the 1 and 5 preset, and power up the unit with the orange button. Choose : Reformat  NAND.

Then you should never crash.

The reason this is radical, is that the database should be stable. Reformatting the NAND rebuilds the database and you shouldn't have to do that. That's why it's a hidden feature.

Then every .... I don't know.... 3-4 hours of recordings or so, reformat your hard drive and rebuild again.

You may want try this out, see if it works for you. I know this sounds crazy, and none of this should be necessary, but the idea ... it's like burning down your house and building a new one every month to get rid of termites. It's not the best way to live, but it will FOR SURE fix your termite problem.

Let me know what you think. I will continue to keep pushing for auto-recovery.

Now that you have the latest firmware, I would reformat your NAND.

documents and settings > all users > application data >Neuros

Then if problems persist, we will troubleshoot. You shouldn't be crashing.

We looked into what was causing the delays, and there was a glitch. For those of you considering it, you may want to wait a week or two, eventually, it won't take 4 weeks, but not today...

Dear Corroded,

I am sorry to hear about what happened. There is no function that would ever make all the music disappear from the hard drive, and I'm interested to know exactly what the orphan track process looked like, and when you realized the music was gone.

My thought is that the unit malfunctioned and reformatted, a problem we have not see with the firmware 2.x series.

So this should be a fluke, and shouldn't happen again. But as they said, please have an extra copy and not the only copy on the portable device, it's an industry standard request. Also, if this comes up again, we can walk you through it, just to make sure you're not hitting a wrong button.

On the forums, everyone likes to point to orphan tracks, but in your case, depending on how the tracks got onto the Neuros in the first place, you could also have re-imported and re-connected the tracks.

Anyway, I am sorry to hear about this. Extra information about the exact point of the failure may help us prevent this in the future.

And for the record, I really do wish that if it says 4 weeks, that we turn it around in 4 weeks or less.

The larger problem is that it's hard to do "process improvement" on a one-time thing. If in general, things were too slow and the customers were dis-pleased, we would examine the process. In this case, it was a mistake of them turning around units at the top of the pile, not in the order they were received. Now they know, but it slowed things down for some people.

Again, if it's been over 4.5 weeks, and you are concerned, you are welcome to give us a call and we'll see what the status is.

There might be a slight delay, but not much. Some of the problem is that people heard about other people having a shorter turnaround time than 4 weeks, and sent theirs in. We have a lot of calls from people after 2 weeks, asking about their upgrade.

As for not knowing the exact status, remember that hardware upgrades are relatively unprescedented in technology. Call Apple and ask if they'll upgrade your iPod hardware from a year ago, and convert it to the mini model for a nominal fee, and see what they say.

This hardware upgrade is a one-time thing, and not worth the time or expense to set up an entire tracking system between our shipping partner and ourselves.

So please have a little patience, I know there is NO lockup and they are moving along and shipping out units every day.

Hmm. I added a footnote that got lost, I think.

The good news on my previous note is that if your serial number gets wiped out, we can fix it without a repair. We just send you a file and walk you through some super secret keypresses and fix you up.

You can buy a 2.0 backpack now. And people are making their own bundles.

We're going to add some instuctions, but I will say this, and ask you all to pass it around as appropriate:

DO NOT PUT 1.0 FW ON A USB 2.0 UNIT.

We are going to get our 2.0 FW up to snuff and into production in a week or two, and pull the 1.0 firmware off the site.

The reason this is important is that if you put 1.0 FW into a 2.0 backpack AS SOON AS YOU INSERT THE BACKPACK, it wipes out your serial number.

Then, when the MyFi enhancements are added, it will be detected by serial number. So if you serial number is 000001 you will get nothing.

Apportum,

We can upgrade your unit, OR sell you a new backpack. Another option may be to negotiate a HD upgrade through Cool4U.

We have to stamp things out a bit, and keep things simple. In the longer run, it will help keep the prices low for everyone, otherwise we would have to bill and build every unit like a custom order, and it would get labor-intensive.

We apologize for any discomfort.

*These USB2.0 backpacks are Gamma units. This means that they are from our first production run. If you experience any problems with your new USB2.0 backpack, we will as always do whatever it takes so that you are 100% satisfied. As a token of our good faith we will replace your new USB2.0 backpack free of charge at any time within 12 months of your upgrade or offer you a refund if you are not entirely satisfied.

So these are not test units. We have done two field tests, the term gamma is going to be used a lot in the future, almost a branding term for pre-release, cutting edge, open, be-a-part-of-the-development-of-the-product message.

To respond to Skeez post, it's not always going to take 4 weeks. Once we get the hang of it, the turnaround time will be much less.
