footballer, there are three things that I would try, though be careful with 2 & 3....
1) Try connecting just the backpack with the "brain" removed. I've noticed that firmware glitches in the brain can sometimes cause a lock-up. This removes the firmware from the equation entirely.
2) Make sure you've run the 10.4.8 update that was released last weekend. I don't think there were any USB updates, but it may not be a glitch in USB in particular. (I would also suggest running "Verify Disk" and "Verify Permissions" under Disk Utility. It seems to be the catch-all response to most OSX support requests, and if the mount-point has bad permission settings, that could very well be the cause.)
3) If you know UNIX at all, you can run mount from the terminal. I personally haven't played around with OSX's command line to feel comfortable giving you the steps, though.

In MOST situations, if you start freaking out over things going "missing" the steps I would recommend (IANA Neuros Employee):
Close NSM / NDBM / Sorune / Etc.
Open up the drive through My Computer.
Find the file called "Music". All of your files should be in there. If they are, copy the entire Music folder back to your PC.
If you want to be really paranoid, follow instructions (Found tons of places elsewhere) to re-format the Neuros, then start from scratch.

Joe, You know, if a lot of these design choices are happening in meetings and you'd like to share them with everyone online, why not podcast design meetings? Set up a topic header so responses can go under each respective "episode"? I'd say "Neurocast" it, but that's something entirely different and cooler.

This is a known bug. OSX automatically mounts the Neuros as Read-Only if you use the old USB 1.1 plug in the head unit. You need to use the USB 2.0 plug (The tiny one) on the backpack.
I believe Ubuntu and some other forms of Linux were having a similar problem, but those are also fixed by forcing RW mode when you mount it (or in fstab).

My ONLY issue with getting a 442v2 is the lack of NeuroCast. I use it far too often to be without it.
(Money is a bit of a concern now, too, now that I have a shiny new MacBook Pro, but such is life.)

Neuros Digital Audio Computer / Neuros Digital Audio Computer - I need help! / Re: Sorune 0.5 zip for neuros

I used to have to deal with this a lot when I worked at Staples. Darn Iomega....
There are two different kinds of "Zip"s with computers.
One is the Zip drive you mentioned. Obsolete (mostly) disc.
The other is a Zip file. This has nothing to do with the disc/drive. What it is is a single file containing multiple files for easier download. If you have Windows XP, you just double-click on this file and it should open up and show you the contents. Then you run the installer inside, or copy files out to wherever you (or the install instructions) want them.

1) If I do get an external hard drive so I can keep music downloaded in the future on the computer, how do I configure the neuros with my PC so that the downloads save to the external hard drive as opposed to my downloads or my music.
This has nothing to do with the Neuros, and everything to do with the ripping software you're using. In the options menu of that software, you should be able to change the directory it stores the songs. (This varies from program to program. If you can let me know what you're using, I should be able to help more.)
2) If I were to get a new computer, how would I be able to save all the music currently on the neuros mp3, since the music currently on there is " not in the original location". It has been saved to cdr and deleted from the HD.
The Neuros looks like an external HD to the computer. You just open that drive through My Computer, and all the music is in a folder called "Music". Copy it back over from the Neuros to the new PC.

No problem.
I'm kinda surprised at Sorune's performance. Perhaps someone from that camp could explain what was happening?
And if you like NDBM that much, keep in mind it's a SourceForge project, and I'm sure there are bugs and feature requests. Maybe you could even work on making it ready for native-binary builds of it for Windows and Posix as well as the JVM jar files?

Which sync manager are you using? NSM, NDBM, or Sorune?
There are a good number of posts on here asking about sync managers, and it's fairly unanimous that NDBM and Sorune are the superior options. (No offense meant to the NSM team.) Either way, all three are open source, so if you want an extra feature or a bug squished, you can do it yourself or commission someone else to.
Personally, I'd reccommend NDBM. Also, make sure you're using the USB2.0 cable (The custom job that plugs into the backpack.) The USB1.1 port is DEAD SLOW. Why? Because it's USB1.1.

They are a really cool unit, with a lot of good software written for them. I've had a few problems with mine, but the original was one of the earliest models. Neuros has been almost ludicrously helpful each time I've had a problem, with one minor exception. Firmware is the OS for the Neuros. (think Windows, but better.) The newest version removes some features that no one ever used (or could no longer be used) and speeds things up a good bit. I recommend updating if it isn't already. (You can check the version number on the unit.) There are several programs for transferring: http://neurosdbm.sourceforge.net/ - NDBM (Java Win/Mac/Linux) http://www.neurosaudio.com/support/support_NeurosMP3_updates.asp - NSM (Windows Only) http://www.sorune.com/ - Sorune (Perl Win/Linux) Or write your own, if you're so inclined. The FM quality is rather good. It takes a bit of tweaking to find the best station and adjust the volume gain, but once you do it sounds as good as any other FM station.

You are correct that this trip is due to my error, but the previous 3 were due to faulty equipment, (Dead unit, faulty USB connection, and faulty charging plug, if I remember correctly.) and with any other company, I wouldn't bother with a paid repair, I'd just replace it with another company's equipment.
But the design, and support I've recieved on previous repairs, is top-notch, and I'd like to see a company like Neuros succeed to show other companies that putting customer support and quality first is a viable and functional business model.
The refusal of letting me drop it off just seemed like such an 180 from previous experiences that it had me worried, and through e-mail I was getting replies that I was reading as somewhat terse. (Possibly a parsing error on my part.) I still like my Neuros and wish NA the best, but now I'm a little more on-the-fence as to whether or not I'll upgrade to an NIII or 442.

Neuros Digital Audio Computer / Neuros Digital Audio Computer - I need help! / Support Shipping Requirements
|

I vacation in Chicago fairly regularly. When I dropped my Neuros last week, I figured I lucked out dropping it so close to a Chicago trip. I e-mail support to let them know it's coming, and am told they HAVE to get it from a FedEx, UPS, DHL, or USPS driver only. I wasn't told the "Or else what", but this seems awful prejudiced against my company's new courier branch. And on top of which, now I have to find a FedEx location in Chicago, and hope that FedEx Ground is allowable, despite not being on the list. I dropped it off for a bad charging circuit last August. What changed that you requre such specific shipping terms? While I've not been the most vocal customer, I love my Neuros despite problems and issues aplenty (This will be service trip #4 for the unit, and I normally only give a company 3 shots.) I am starting to wonder if the community feel is more "Thank you, but stay off of our lawn." Now if you'll excuse me, I have to find a ship center in Chicago to ship it 40 blocks. quote: Hello Chad,
We are sorry, but we cannot accept a package unless it is delivered by USPS, UPS, FedEX or DHL, we do not accept repair deliveries from private couriers, we apologize for the inconvenience.
Sincerely, Neuros Support
