1  Neuros OSD / Neuros OSD - I need help! / Re: get back from OSD screen to watch TV? on: November 18, 2006, 01:27:32 AM
Thanks, I'll try this when I get a chance.
2  Neuros OSD / Neuros OSD - I need help! / get back from OSD screen to watch TV? on: November 15, 2006, 08:02:30 PM
I didn't find a key that would take me back from teh OSD menu to the TV (through composite cable)... Anyone know if there is a key that I'm missing?

yeah, that format seems to work great for video ipod and 442.   matches up well and I can put more on it.  You could do other things but I was surprised how simple the command line was.

it's been quiet as more things have been going on with OSD and not so much for the 442.

About programming a new firmware for the v1, I don't think that' s going to happen.  Nothing has been done on this version for quite awhile.     Focuses are on the OSD and then the 440V2
5  Neuros 442 Personal Media Player / Neuros 442 - Feedback and Discussion / ffmpeg and .asf files on: October 26, 2006, 09:54:52 PM
Just wanted to add that calling ffmpeg with this command line seems to pack down a recording fairly well (if you're only going to use it on the 442)... i haven't fully tested these files, but have looked around at them and they seem to work.

ffmpeg -vcodec xvid -b 300 -qmin 3 -qmax 5 -bufsize 4096 -g 300 -acodec aac -ab 96 -i <yourfile.asf> -s 320x240 -aspect 4:3 <yourfile.mp4>

I know quite awhile ago people were saying that the files created by the 442 were huge, i was able to free up some space (the files so far are about half the size as the originals)

That's like coming in here and asking who played "Lumpy" on leave it to beaver.  That's not even close.

Well.   I used GB-PVR and a hauppauge PVR-350 to capture stuff to mpeg2 and convert it to divx.   Plus a plextor TV-402U.   Time+place shift your TV.  But it comes with a cost -- I use another computer, and have installed, reinstalled drivers, and replaced a few hardware components over the last 8-9 months of use.  But overall, the reason why we like it this way is that you're limited by hard drive space, you're not throwing money to the hopes that a clumsy DRM scheme won't stop you from watching what you bought.  BlueRay and HDTV is annoying me, not because it has clearer content, but because it's just a scheme to lock us in to some other stupid DRM scheme.

I jumped on the woot offer over a year ago and loved the 442, but fully expected some of the annoyances to be fixed.  Neuros is alleviating some of that by keying us in on some of the newer things they're working on - -the OSD is the "wild west" apparently on the message boards.   This has some potential and after that I think we'll get the 442v2 (hopefully with some added experience from the OSD project)

As far as usability, the ipod is wonderful -- the buttons and everything are really well-designed.

But if you're talking flexibility, the 442 just gets its stuff from a drag and drop.  And it reads divx Smiley

Now that's good thinking!
10  Neuros 442 Personal Media Player / Neuros 442 - I need help! / Re: 442 locks up/reboots during playback on: April 04, 2006, 08:54:50 AM
Wow, yeah, I thought you meant mp4s and thought you may have the same problem.  Everything else worked for me (and these files work ok for me) so I'd call support
11  Neuros 442 Personal Media Player / Neuros 442 - I need help! / Re: 442 locks up/reboots during playback on: April 03, 2006, 12:09:51 PM
I had a terrible time with trying to play .mp4 files (Mine were downloaded from http://www.archive.org) -- a great site which I have given kudos to in the past -- I didn't share the TV playback problems, but I had many times where the unit locked up while trying to play mpeg4 files.

My fix :
I had to re-encode them all to DivX format to get rid of the 20-30 minute lockups that you mentioned.  I still bring a safety pin along with my headphones, although my playback problems were solely with the .mp4 format and I haven't had a problem since I stopped watching the mpeg4s...  the .asf files that the 442 creates and the .avis that my plextor convertX makes have all worked with no problems whatsoever.

What people will probably want to know is whether the flimsy rubber cover on the AV jacks counts.  I think this came off for many 442 owners, and the 442 is probably better without it (unless I suppose you are watching video in the sand)

Info for wooters :

I'm hoping to upgrade to a new 100GB v2, and trade mine to a friend of mine who is waiting for my model.  The woot deal was tough, we had no time to think about it, this is one impulse buy I'm glad I made, all in all.
14  Neuros 442 Personal Media Player / Neuros 442 - Feedback and Discussion / How many Neuros 442's out there on: March 13, 2006, 09:56:23 PM
Just curious if anyone knows how many 442 units have been sold so far.  100, 1,000?
15  Neuros 442 Personal Media Player / Neuros 442 - I need help! / Re: yellow bars across screen on: March 13, 2006, 09:45:22 PM
This may sound strange, but when you see that the next time, try just letting it go and see if it still records.

A couple of months ago I started using gb-pvr software to record to DivX, but when I used my 442 to do the recording I'd get this (ever since 2 firmware versions before).   I posted my results, but as I recall it would actually record and it was just a goofy screen issue that did not affect the recording.  I suspected it was something related to having the timer on, but I dont' have conclusive evidence of that.

Can you try this and let me know if it still records?
