Neuros 442 Personal Media Player / Neuros 442 - Feedback and Discussion / ffmpeg and .asf files

Just wanted to add that calling ffmpeg with this command line seems to pack down a recording fairly well (if you're only going to use it on the 442)... i haven't fully tested these files, but have looked around at them and they seem to work.
ffmpeg -vcodec xvid -b 300 -qmin 3 -qmax 5 -bufsize 4096 -g 300 -acodec aac -ab 96 -i <yourfile.asf> -s 320x240 -aspect 4:3 <yourfile.mp4>
I know quite awhile ago people were saying that the files created by the 442 were huge, i was able to free up some space (the files so far are about half the size as the originals)

Well. I used GB-PVR and a hauppauge PVR-350 to capture stuff to mpeg2 and convert it to divx. Plus a plextor TV-402U. Time+place shift your TV. But it comes with a cost -- I use another computer, and have installed, reinstalled drivers, and replaced a few hardware components over the last 8-9 months of use. But overall, the reason why we like it this way is that you're limited by hard drive space, you're not throwing money to the hopes that a clumsy DRM scheme won't stop you from watching what you bought. BlueRay and HDTV is annoying me, not because it has clearer content, but because it's just a scheme to lock us in to some other stupid DRM scheme.
I jumped on the woot offer over a year ago and loved the 442, but fully expected some of the annoyances to be fixed. Neuros is alleviating some of that by keying us in on some of the newer things they're working on - -the OSD is the "wild west" apparently on the message boards. This has some potential and after that I think we'll get the 442v2 (hopefully with some added experience from the OSD project)

Neuros 442 Personal Media Player / Neuros 442 - I need help! / Re: 442 locks up/reboots during playback

I had a terrible time with trying to play .mp4 files (Mine were downloaded from http://www.archive.org) -- a great site which I have given kudos to in the past -- I didn't share the TV playback problems, but I had many times where the unit locked up while trying to play mpeg4 files. My fix : I had to re-encode them all to DivX format to get rid of the 20-30 minute lockups that you mentioned. I still bring a safety pin along with my headphones, although my playback problems were solely with the .mp4 format and I haven't had a problem since I stopped watching the mpeg4s... the .asf files that the 442 creates and the .avis that my plextor convertX makes have all worked with no problems whatsoever.

This may sound strange, but when you see that the next time, try just letting it go and see if it still records.
A couple of months ago I started using gb-pvr software to record to DivX, but when I used my 442 to do the recording I'd get this (ever since 2 firmware versions before). I posted my results, but as I recall it would actually record and it was just a goofy screen issue that did not affect the recording. I suspected it was something related to having the timer on, but I dont' have conclusive evidence of that.
Can you try this and let me know if it still records?
