1  Neuros OSD / Neuros OSD - I need help! / Re: Codec for ASF files? on: October 13, 2006, 12:52:59 PM
kelly,

I've got about 4 hours worth of important video (in-car racing footage) I recorded in .asf using 3.20-0.18, i've found I can play it on my PC w/ the VLC media player; but when i try to transcode it into other formats, it is still unreadable by other media players, and especially by several different DVD authoring programs.  i've tried a number of different codecs and file types, trying many of the common combinations, and even a few oddballs.

Is there any known good transcoding software or tricks that can help me get these to where I can burn them to a standard DVD format?

I have also now tried both 4GB and 8GB CF cards from Transcend.  no issues with either.

I couldn't find that codec anywhere;  I ended up switching over to the VLC media player at least for the time being, until the MP4/AVI file constructors get sorted out in the firmware.

you can find VLC at www.videolan.org  and it seems to be a pretty solid player and plays the ASF files pretty well.

In regards to power supply, our sanctioning body (Grand Am Cup) requires all power to run through a master cutoff switch, so what i've done for our OSD setup is this.

12V supply to a 5V regulator (basically the internals from a sony PSP car adapter), then run the 5V to an external battery designed for a sony PSP (using one by Intec) and then connect the battery to the OSD.   What this does, is allows the OSD to continue to run if the power gets shut off for any reason (most likely for us is an accidental switch-off during a driver change) and the regular supply keeps the battery topped up during normal use.

Granted, I've just put this into the car in the last few days and haven't had a chance to put it through its paces yet . . . but we are racing in a 6-hour enduro this weekend at VIR, so I should have some decent testing under my belt next week.  As soon as I get some time, I'll get some pics of the setup and a more thorough explanation of what I've done.

kelly,

Do you have any idea when the resloution issues will be sorted out?  I am very much looking forward to being able to record in 720x480.

I've only tried a 256mb Lexar CF card, and a Sandisk 1.0GB SD card.  Both worked fine as delivered and when updated to 3.20-0.16

Freaksed, glad to hear it worked!  but I can't take credit for it, i got it from MGao's blog when he posted the latest firmware update.  I had the exact same issue, and had to go hunting for the answer.

create a new folder on your memory card called "newpackage" and put the .upk file in there and rename it r3.upk

so you end up with this   /newpackage/r3.upk

then plug the card in and boot up the OSD, it should update automatically and completely.  I had the same issue with my unit.

Well, I'm not entirely clear on what was happening, but as near as I can tell, I had either an early, or incomplete firmware installed.  When I would try to update, it would update the version number in the properties window, but not actually update the firmware.  It would drop out and reboot, and never having performed a successful update, I didn't know any better.

I finally was able to force an update using the /newpackage/r3.upk method described by mgao in his blog.

This appears to have cleared up any unique issues I was having.

Will-powered, that looks like a great setup!

Ex-Navy,
I am actually planning to use one OSD (not the R2) and only one per car, because the AIM DaVid system we have in the car already does the same thing as the trackvision software, but it does it real time, so I only have to record one video signal, and I still get both cameras plus data.  I'd show you an example, but everything I have is on miniDV tapes, and the camcorder is broken . . .    The cameras we run are bullet cams that came w/ the DaVid system, and they are mouted on small swivel mounts that strap to the roll cage.  We mount ours with one facing out the windshield, and one down on the driver to watch what he's doing w/ his hands and feet.

As far as the radio audio, I'm going to have to break into the vehicle radio harness somewhere, because our series requires driver changes, and I can't afford an additional connector for the driver to have to disconnect/reconnect during a a changeover.

And, fwiw, I may have to get with you about an Olsen circuit that will work w/ the new OSD.  We have only one race left this year, but expect to hear from me during the off-season, lol.

Glad to read I'm not the only one thinking along these lines.  I've just gotten a couple of OSD units for use in our Grand Am Cup race cars.  I'm planning to use them in conjunction w/ an AIM DaVid Video system tied in w/ our AIM MXL data acqusition unit  (basically a video multiplexer that combines two cameras and data into a single video feed).  For now, I'm planning to manually start the recorder w/ the remote prior to a race/session start, but eventually I'd like to have a hardwired switch.  i'm also planning to use an independant power source for the unit, just in case the main vehicle power shutoff is flipped by accident during a pit stop / driver change.  I'm still trying to figure out how to tie into the radio to get race comm. audio as well.
12  Neuros OSD / Neuros OSD - Feedback & Discussion / Available resolution settings in gamma software? on: September 27, 2006, 11:24:48 AM
I've been playing around w/ my gamma OSD for the last few days, and I've only been able to record in a 320x240 resolution.  The quality settings function, but I'm unable to open the "Advanced" settings.

I've tried it with both the firmware as shipped, and updated to the latest 3.20 . . . that was posted the other day.

Am I doing something wrong?  Or is this simply part of the MP4 file constructor not working yet?

I would really like to start doing some testing at 640x480, and at D1 as well.

Any help/advice would be appreciated.
13  Neuros OSD / Neuros OSD - Feedback & Discussion / Re: Interested in learning embedded programming (on the OSD)? on: September 04, 2006, 09:11:06 PM
Joe,

I will have to say that I am also extremely excited about learning some embedded programming using the OSD.  I've had some Pascal and C classes in college years ago . . .   I am anxiously awaiting getting my hands on a gamma sample to use in my race car video/data acquisition setup.
