Okay, so I've had my 40GB Neuros (not sure if it's a Neuros I or II. How do I tell?) for over a year. With the exception of having to reformat the flash shortly after I got it, I've never had a single problem with it. So -- last night I drove on a two hour car trip in weather that was certainly warmer than usual for this time of year. I was running the neuros on the car charger. When I got to where I was going, I disconnected the car charger before turning off the car, and turned off the neuros. Went in.

Several hours later I was leaving, went out to the car about 3AM. The temperature had dropped to 10 degrees farenheit in the interim. I got into the car, started it, plugged the neuros into the car charger, and it came on, as usual. It ran for about 10 seconds, then said, "Low battery, shutting down", and shut down. For the 2 hour drive back, I had it plugged into with the car charger. The back light to the screen kept coming on, at varying levels of brightness, it would get dimmer and brighter and dimmer and brighter, and then go out again. No text of any sort ever displayed on the screen.

When I got home I plugged it into the AC adapter (about an hour ago). I haven't seen anything happen at all.

So, does anyone have any idea what the problem might be, or how it can be fixed? Is my neuros just hosed?

on a few occasions when i left my device in a very warm car i had this problem.  Heat will really kill a battery, especially one like this i guess.  I would try removing the face plate and try charging the unit with the wall adapter with the face plate off.  There should be a little blinking light, that blinks in two or three intervals.  Trying leaving it charging this way for a few hours.  Then unplug the unit and reattach the faceplate and see if that helps.  But when i had the problem similar to your i did this.  I do not think it has anything to do with cold, it never seemed to affect mine.

let me know if this works for you or not

Thanks for the reply. I took the Neuros unit out of the backpack and plugged the AC adapter into just the backpack. There is a small light to the right of the ac adapter port in the backpack that is normally covered by the main unit when it's in the backpack. I never noticed it before so I'm not sure what it should be doing, but right now it doesn't do anything when I plug in the AC adapter. Is this the light to which you are referring?

Yes, that is what i am refering to. If that is not blinking your unit is not getting a charge.  I would suggest taking the backpack apart and checking to make sure the solder connection is intact.  If you are up for this you will need a T6 Torx screwdriver.  Also, it is possible, but not likely that your ac adapter is shot.  Also, if your battery is shot, i dont think the light will flash either.

Does the unit power on if you plug it into the usb port? if it does not i am willing to bet that it is the battery that is dead.  Batteries are cheap and you can get them from neuros.

let me know,
Derek

Thanks again for the help. If you mean the mini-usb port on the backpack, I tried that, nothing happens when I plug into it. If you mean the USB port on the main neuros, I don't have a USB adapter that will fit it, so I haven't tried that yet.

yeah, its the mini one on the backpack i was talking about.  if nothing happens i am guessing your battery is shot.  How long have you had the unit?  I would contact support and tell them what we talked about, and see what they think as well.

I just checked when I bought it -- I actually bought it in april of last year. So I guess I've had it under a year. I'll call Neuros tomorrow and see if they can do anything.

Followed Derek's advice.  The charge connection was poor so I resoldered the connection to board.  Now works fine.
One point however - to get the front off the back pack, I needed a size 6 star screwdriver not a torx.
