My recorder is being delivered today and I have been reading the forums. I mainly bought it so that I can record video's from vh1 classic to my 5th gen ipod. My question is, I have a high def TV and I do not wish to unhook the component cables from the cable box or the tv, The tv however does has a monitor out and 2 audio outs. I know that the recorder cannot record high def and that is fine, the vh1 classic channel is not in high def.

If the monitor out on your tv is component video then yes you can record from them. My monitor outputs on my plasma are component and this is where I record from.
