I use my Neuros for business and record many lectures, presentations, etc. using the built-in microphone (like you would a handheld cassette/recorder).  Most of the recordings are MP3 files and playback fine. However, I have had several recordings that listed the following file extentions: MPO, MP1 and MP2.  As I said, these are recordings I have made myself and not external files downloaded from another source.

What causes this to happen and can it be controlled?

I've never seen anything like that. What firmware are you using?

I'm using 2.21. I haven't updated because my Neuros works just fine, plus I have the original Neuros (pre-flash) and most of the updates seem to apply to the Neuros 2.

I happen to like 2.25. I think most people use the latest (2.28), but I've had problems with file corruption when I used it. Firmwares work for either the old or new version of the Neuros.

You can try to update and see if that helps. If the files still play OK and you can't fix it, you may just have to learn to deal with the oddity.
