Next up is putting in a new/larger HD.  I left my unit in a protective case in a light rain one afternoon.  It was clear the unit had gotten wet but was switched off at the time and left to dry out thoroughly.  Since then the HD makes a horrible whining sound every so often when it's being accessed.  Add to that the fact that I'm less than 500MB away from the drive limit and that I can again sync with my Precious and I think it's time to give her a bigger drive.

I have read a few posts about sizes and am wondering about going for the big enchilada: a 500GB Seagate Momentus.  Has anyone had luck with a drive so large?  Have people been able to get around the 137GB FAT32 limit using some of the suggestions I've seen posted around here.  Anything I need to know before I crack the case open?  Since Cool4u2view's site is now offline anyone who has had experience with this minor surgery would be welcome!

137GB isn't a FAT32 limit, it's an LBA limit.  I've heard of 200GB drives working fine in the USB2.0 backpacks, so you should be okay with 500GB.

That's what I get for skimming articles... thanks for the clarification on LBA vs. FAT32.

When you say working fine do you mean that the device can see/use all 200GB?  Do you format it with the diagnostic boot of Neuros or format it through Windows?

I didn't do it!

I think this particular person did neither...  I think you put the drive in, then scandisk / chkdisk it from Windows.

It should be in the forums here somewhere...

I'm not able to find it...

I know there's an issue getting it to format beyond 128GB, but I don't remember the trick to getting it to do so...

Sorry...didn't mean to imply that you did.  I know you said another poster.

That contains a discussion about formatting the drive via Windows.

I appreciate your help Chad.  I was hoping someone out there who has used a larger drive would jump in and explain if they've overcome the size limit so that the full capacity is recognized, still use their Neuros for music and NMDB will work without puking on the size.

Now is that too much to ask?   Wink
