My external drive is formatted FAT32 and has 15gig free space.   It does not need to be defragged.  When I set up to record through the menu, the drive is recognized, however when I try to start recording, it says I have insufficient space available.  Thanks

Very odd. First off cehck you're running the most recent firmware!

Otherwise when you navigate into the USB drive from Play|Browse, does the status bar at the base of the screen give you a free space readout? Do ensure that the default destination for recordings is set to a directory IN the USB drive.
