Grrr... just have to vent for a minute, excuse me
I was so excited to see that Starkey is almost done with WMA tag reading in NDBM. I decided to check out the Walmart music store since I know they use WMA as their format. They have a test song available, and lo and behold, it is not DRM'ed. It played beautifully on the Neuros.
So I bought a few songs, and these it turns out are DRM'ed. What a bummer. I called customer support and they were quite helpful. They actually started to tell me how to remove the DRM by burning to CD & reripping! As it turns out, my only Windows box is at work and I don't have a CD burner there, so they gave me a refund without any problems. I made sure to let her know I was a Linux & Neuros user though. I went so far as to suggest Ogg Vorbis too but I think I lost her on that one.
I guess I'm just frustrated because I am a potential customer, sitting here with credit card in hand, but I cannot patronize them.
Just wanted to give everyone a heads up, don't waste your time unless you don't want to use these files on your Neuros!

Also don't waste your time patronizing Walmart. If you're that eager to use your credit card, try a vendor that isn't pro-censorship, exploitative of its workers, and thrives on destroying small businesses. -F

I have to agree with the gripe that started this post. I thought I was golden after downloading Wal-Mart's test song and it worked fine on the Neuros. After buying and downloading some music, I ran into the same DRM crap. I could burn them off to CD I guess and then re-rip but what a pain. I've done a little searching on cracking DRM but that seems too painful as well (not to mention the possible legal issues).
When can we possibly expect DRM support for the Neuros so we can play our nifty little 88-cent songs?
Thanks! |

Censorship and music should not be combined. I will never set foot in a walmart again (especially since they cross-threaded my drain plug on my car) and also the music I listen to would never be found in Walmart in the first place thankfully.
Be sure to check out the label that sells the music, sometimes they have downloads available. |

try "www.allofmp3.com"
way better music download site.... although not quite as many songs... but updating daily... approx 3-14 cents per song... 14 cents will give you 320 kbps mp3. price depends on quality you want and length of song... $0.01 per Mb.
not my find... thank deguass.... a fellow neuros user |

| You don't necessarily have to burn then re-rip. You could download a certain wma plugin from winamp 2.5 and then use a file writer to re-encode the file. Not all file writers work even with the plugin, though. |

| Transcoding makes for annoying artifacts, anyway. I won't give my money to anyone unless they give me music in the format of my choice, without DRM. |
