I'm following the instructions in the HOWTO (http://www.theneuros.com/index.php/HOWTO:442) trying to create xvid files out of some home movies I've burned to DVD using a Philips DVD burner. However, the DVD I've created has a bunch of files and I'm not sure which to use. There's a VIDEO_RM and a VIDEO_TS directory on the DVD, with various VOB, INF, DAT files, etc. Help!

| the vob files are the actual video. those should all be in the video_ts folder. sounds like the audio is stored in those files, sometimes you have to find the corresponding files in the audio_ts folder. I'll give the method on the wiki a shot when i get home and see if i can help out more. |

The VOB files are all equal size, I was hoping that the different "chapters" or whatever on the disc would somehow be split up, but I guess it doesn't work that way? It looks like I'll end up with 5 randomly split up AVI files based on the VOB files? I split up the "chapters" based on different segments, etc, but I gather that split is not preserved in the VOB structure?

Now, even though I put the quality at 75%, it's creating files that are larger than the original VOB files it seems.
EDIT- it seems that even though I just selected the first VOB file, it seems to have created one AVI file of the whole DVD. Confusing!

well, it created an AVI file, but the 442 can't play it. It just shows the spinning hourglass. Anyone else seen this? I thought I followed the instructions to the letter except that I was using a VOB file from a home video DVD.

Your video can be split up into chapters either using DVD decrypter (even though your VOB files aren't encrypted. This would rip the original chapters from the DVD), or nero, or even windows movie maker. Nero for example will automatically detect scene changes.
Using DVD Decrypter hit mode and make sure IFO is selected, next hit 'tools' and goto 'settings' hit the 'IFO Mode' tab. Next to where it says file splitting hit the drop down arrow and select 'By Chapter'.. next hit ok and hit the decrypt button.
In AutoGK you will need to select file input and you want to point it to your first chapter make sure all the settings are correct then hit add job. Because you want to convert by chapter you will have to select each chapter for file input and hit add job seperately. Once all jobs are ready you can hit start.
If only testing it is easier to test one chapter vs all of them at once.
As far as your video not playing... there is a small utility called MPEG4modifier from http://moitah.net/ (you will need to have the .NET 1.1 framework installed to run it) Run that utility and point it to your video one it is read hit the 'video info' button. If GMC, Qpel, or sometimes packed bitstream is on there will be a problem playing back on the 442.
Let me know if this helps..

Thanks. I actually had some of the settings wrong. I installed things out of order and although I had set them per the HOWTO, they some how got set to something different along the way. Now they play, although I can't hear the audio :(
My feeling is that one project we should have is to come up with a dumbed down version of AutoGK that is pre-configured to work with the 442. That HOWTO is a great guide, but it's pretty daunting and easy to screw up if you make a mistake like I did.
Maybe this is a good project for another bounty? What do you all think?

I too followed the HOWTO:442 page exactly and I am getting the same spinning hourglass.
I downloaded the MPEG4Modifier and none of the GMC, Qpel, or packed bitstream are enabled.
Any ideas? |

I have the same problem with all the video I converted using autoGk. I gave up on it and went to the unlead Video toolbox. I had some problems at first but was able to get files converted and to play on the 442. |
