The "what's included" list includes an entry for "Installation CD", will that have NSM or similar software? I have focused so hard on what the video settings would be that I hadn't even thought about building playlists for my MP3's.

If it is not NSM, will it have a way to detect orphans from dragging and dropping audio files on?

FYI-With 442's beginning to ship, there should be manuals, firmware, and software under the support section of the main site.

I'm pretty sure the 442 does not use a sync manager. That CD might have Windows 98 USB drivers.

You will be able to find more information on the wiki: http://theneuros.com/index.php/Product_Description:The_442
I also encourage anybody who has a 442 to edit the content to help fellow 442 owners. You are right though, we are a little behind on the main site. I hope that your feedback will give us the content we need to come up with addtional documents for the 442 under the support section very soon.

On the wiki, I only see mention of being able to drag and drop files, and a feature to "play entire folder". Will I have to re-organize my songs into folders for playlists? That will be a LOT of work and not how I want my songs organized.

Go the the beta tester feedback for the 442 (first page). Third Rail Design Lab sent a post august 5th. He has been focusing on the properties of the 442 as an MP3 player, he will be more helpful than me.

There is no proprietary software for the 442. Creating a list of Favorites can be done within the menus of the device. First, press menu. All you have to do is select Add To Favorites for whichever song or group of songs you wish. Choose to Update Playlist. To view your new Playlist, press Menu and select Repeat Favorites.

The 442 views in folders. It does not run off of ID3 tags. To make things even easier, you can simply put your songs in the order of your choice in a designated folder. You can label this folder.

More information about creating a Playlist is in the user guide.

That is a poor way to organize playlists.

Using the interface to organize 5000 songs (roughly 20GB) into about 5 or 6 playlists will take forever. However, playing by artist or album could be done by selecting folders.

To allow playing by artist, album or playlist, I would have to leave most music files organized like I currently do (artist/album/song), then also copy most songs into playlist folders. Using folders to organize the songs into playlists will result in many songs residing in multiple folders and be a HUGE waste of disk space. That would take the 442 from being the perfect place to house all of my MP3's and about 25 movies, to either having to cut in half my music or video selections.

I couldn't agree more. Just got my 442 yesterday from Woot and I while it has an amazing capacity to store and play a variety of files, be they audio or video, it is equally amazing in its inability to organize them in a way that provides quick and easy access. I have my songs sorted into folders by artist and it takes forever to get down to, for example, the Van Morrison folder. I can't even hit the up "button" to go from the 'A' folders to the 'Z' folders and get to it backwards. Thus everytime I have to scroll down forever. I hope there are some updates to file management before the final release. BTW, why even bother with the "Files Management" option on the main interface? Seriously, that is amazingly cumbersome and I can't imagine anyone using it unless forced to do so because lack of a better alternative.
