The startup manual is horribly written. I haven't seen english like this since I last visited www.engrish.com. It leaves a bad first impression, as someone else noted.

I can't get it to play .mpg or .avi or any video files for that matter! Is there something everyone else knows that I don't?

The player freezes while connected to the USB port.

A fire-wire port would have been nice also. I'm stuck with an old and bulky laptop with USB-1 (Which is one of the reasons I bought the 442) and transfers are really slow.

Quality of wires etc seems sub-standard.

Player doesn't say where it is made in. I'm assuming China.

The pictures can not be viewed as thumbnails and one can not zoom in and out of pictures.

That's it. Hopefully someone can help me with the problems I've been having with video playback.

Agreed that the start up manual is not that great. There is a manual on the CD that came with the package that will be a lot more helpful however. We added the pdf on our site as well see under support of our drop down menu.

As for the files that do not playback:
It could be because the format is not supported by the player, in that case you can easily convert them with a software included on the CD as well (it is called Ulead). It will convert your files into DivX files.

As for the 442 freezing, I imagine that having a USB 1 connection is not really ideal. As you said yourself, the transfert will be slow. I don't think it is b/c of 442 however. Also note that you can not access different files on the 442 as it is connected to your computer, the 442 is locked until you deconnect it.

Well, I hope I helped at least a little. You should read other posts as well, you can even do a keyword search which will save you some time.

Have you tried playing mpeg-4 videos ? I had no problem converting full quality DV to MPEG-4 using iMovie 4. The original DV file was 1.2 GB, I compressed it 40 MB and it works fine.

When you connect the 442 to a USB cable, you will not be able to navigate using the 442, but you can navigate with your PC.

About the firewire port, USB 2 is faster than firewire 400, but slower than firewire 800. The 442 USB port is a USB 2, but if your PC is USB 1, then you will have slow USB 1 speed. Get a USB 2 card adapter for faster transfer rate, only if your notebook has a PCI card slot.
