My brother has the AV700, which is similar to the AV500 but has a 7" screen (and looks different). It is definately a nice device. The interface is quite nice and very responsive. Videos recorded onto it look okay at low quality mode, but I haven't seen the higher modes. I've watched The Big Lebowski on it and it plays well.
The Archos players will be stiff competition for the 442.

I was actually interested in the AV700 but the reviews indicate that video played on the 7" screen display did not look as good as that of the smaller 4" screen. Archos has teamed up with Dish Network and sell a Dish branded version of the AV700 & 500 that can download high speed compressed MPEG 2 video direct thru USB when connected to a dish DVR receiver. Im seriously thinking on getting one of these.
