1  Neuros Digital Audio Computer / Software / Neuros Support Single or MultiGenre Tags? on: May 16, 2006, 07:30:24 PM
The tag editor I got supports multiple tags, but says that many players (especially older ones) only support single genre and only use the first genre tag. Anyone know about this?

Yeah I feel guilty that the Neuros team did all that work and I'm sure it must be doing more because it's slower than sin.

I was using the basic Neuros software. NSM is that?

Someone suggested Sorune and just reconstructing the database with that after using an ID3 Tag editor and moving files onto the hard drive manually. I got confused and couldn't get it to work right (as a computer programmer I get frustrated fast when something doesn't seem to be working as it looks like it should). It just didn't seem to be getting rid of the old Neuros Database file and I was getting duplicate entries (half of them invalid).

I was starting to think of just using the "File Manager" to play music, then I tried the NDBM. Despite the fact that it was a Java app, its was signifigantly faster (this thing would blaze in C!) than the default software. I was able to do just what I wanted, which was to delete the old database and reconstruct a new database. Not sure how it works storing music. I don't keep my Neuros Synced up. I have a 20gb MP3 player because I don't want to hold all that music on my computer and I could just re-rip the majority of it if I had to.

Thank you for bringing this info up. Sorry I didn't reply here that I found NDBM earlier.
3  Neuros Digital Audio Computer / Software / Alternate Software/Firmware for Neruos 2? on: May 16, 2006, 07:57:43 AM
I'm sorry, I really tried.

I used to have an Archos MP3 player and it acted like a hard drive. Drop mp3s onto the disc, the Archos could explore the directory structure you create (bypasses any non music files you store there), read id3 tags and play playlists. Easy.

I've had my Neuros for a bit longer than a year and I procrastinate on putting new music on it because it's such a vile process that takes so much time.

Just deleting files from the thing takes like 20 minutes of Syncing. Thats just removing the info from the "database". Then the software screws up on albums that it adds itself and can't find them again. Channging Tags using their software is like an undead creature slowly draining the life from me. And my choices are to use their software or move the files back to my PC and use a tag editor on my PC and put them back on the Neuros.

Why the hell do you have to jump through hoops? It's a Neuros 2. This means there was a first one and this is either a better solution (omg, my sympathies for Neuros 1 owners then) or they didn't think this awful solution had anything wrong with it. Please tell me that they fixed things with the newer models.

Anywho, I remember my Archos you could download alternate Firmware for it, which speeded it up or gave it special abilities/functions. Is this possible for the Neuros 2? Or even something that works better than their Sync Manager?
4  Neuros Digital Audio Computer / Neuros Digital Audio Computer - I need help! / Neuros can't find the songs it put on my Neuros? on: May 16, 2006, 07:46:45 AM
This is rather odd. I use the Neuros Manager to add some albums. I'm trying to redo some of the tags and I get this error that the tracks aren't found on the file system.

odd. I Explorer into the Neuros and they're there.

Now I see a part of a problem. In some cases the Neuros changed the names. An album might be called "05:22:09:12 Off" in the tag. Okay so I look on the Neuros and the directory for the album is "05220912 Off" (note the colons gone). I understand that problem.

Another album was "Akt (disc one)" and on the actual file structure it was called "Akt (disc one" (no ending parentethis). I fixed it in Windows Explorer and did a search for music on the machine and it found it like it was brand new and it works.

But there are like 20 other albums that don't seem to have any spelling errors in the name.

First off, I'm not putting these on the Neuros myself. I'm letting that awful Sync Manager software do it. Why is it messing up? If it purposefully changes the name of the file/directory, shouldn't the Manager be aware of that change?

The only fix I can think of is to use Explorer to copy the files back to my PC and then remove them from the neuros via the Sync Manager, make sure the files are deleted on the hard drive and then add them again. I haven't gotten that far yet and I'm not sure that will work.

And yeah, I'm using the newest version of the Neuros Mangager and Firmware.

I just synced with the Sync Manager Software last night (thus the posts of my problems) and I believe it said I got a firmware update installed, but this is all I see:

Neuros Audio
Play Queue
FM Radio
HiSi
PC Library
Settings

Version (I assume firmware) is 2.25.0137

"PC Library" is just a listing of what I have registered on my PC with the Sync Manager software.

I'll look into a newer update... or is there something I need to do to "reboot" the neuros to make sure the changes take effect?

-- Edit

Okay I found the update on the site and has special instructions "holding down and the power button to shutdown/startup" which I've never done before. So for all I know, every time it's said "Firmware Downloaded" It's just sitting on my computer somewere waiting for me to reboot my Neuros holding down the down key. Nice.

I'll admit to some schmuckery on my part, but perhaps if the Sync Manager issued instructions that might have helped as well. I'll see if it works when I get home.

I purchased mine a bit more than a year ago and it was dead out of box and missing the USB connector for the backpack. They replaced both ASAP and it's been working with specefied parameters since then.

Yeah, I tried the "auto" feature once. Cheesy

Thats pretty much what I do. Find the station with the least transmissions on it and use that. Then I get pissed because it sounds like crap and I sit in my car for like 20 minutes changing frequencies on the Neuros and then checking to see if it's clearer on the radio.

I get it if it's a limitation of the frequencies, but the iTrip works perfectly in my car, so that says it's something with the Neuros not broadcasting as strongly/effectively and not a totally full FM range.

First off, thank you for the advice.

You can avoid the database management entirely by not using the synchronization software and simply dragging and dropping your MP3s into the "MUSIC" folder and using the Neuros file browser instead of the normal track navigation.

I really like the idea of bypassing the database management. I know where to add the music and even the format Neuros uses in it's file structure.

But when you say "and using the Neuros file browser instead of the normal track navigation." do you mean on the Neuros itself or on the Sync Manager software? Or do you mean the Neuros itself? The Neuros just "Neuros Audio" which sorts/filters where you'll see music.

Alternately, NeurosDBM (http://neurosdbm.sourceforge.net) is synchronization software that, while flawed, is better than the software that comes with the system.

It's worth a shot. Unless it goes deleting mp3/ogg files from the unit or crashes it, it can't really hurt things.

I've had my neuros for over a year. I got it because there was no direct line in available for the radio on my new car and I didn't want to tear things apart to add one. So an FM transmitter is the only thing I can think of.

Rather than get an iPod and an additional addon, the Neuros 2 had it all built in.

Only it doesn't really work. It transmits. At best it sounds staticy and faded out. I'm not sure if it's that all the radio frequencies are being used where I am, but my friend just got an iPod and iTrip and her mp3 player sounds near perfect over the FM radio, even in my car. That really annoys the heck out of me.

is this a signal strength issue? Anything to boost it? Maybe an additional thing to plug into it? I just want to make the Neuros do what it's supposed to do and what I purchased it for. If I didn't luck out and get a new job where I can listen to music while I work the thing would be sitting in a box gathering dust.

I have like 30gb of music on my 40gb Neuros II and if I want to change the tags on multiple tracks it takes an exponentually longer amount of time.

1 is like instant. 5 takes a few seconds. 15 takes a few minutes. 30+ takes like... lets leave the computer and do something else.

Same with removing software, but on the Sync phase. I want to delete 100 tracks? 20 minutes. Why? When I explore onto the unit, the tracks are gone nearly instantly. The 20 minutes is removing the records from the database or something.

Is there any 3rd party software that works better for this? Anyway to "clean up" the database to make it go faster or something?

I know I could move all my files to my PC and retag them, then re-upload them all again to the Neuros, which would take like 12 hours of up/downloading and seems to be my best bet. I can't do it on the Neuros because the changes to the tags won't be in the database it keeps.

There is something to be said for the Archos MP3 players (the last one I had). Plug it into the computer, drag music onto it. Unplug it and play the music.
