Am I going to get a dead unit?

I was pretty close to buying an 80Gb Neuros II but upon further research, I've found a lot of people claiming to have been shipped dead units or units that have only worked a short period of time. While there seems to be a unanimous positive opinion of Neuros support, I'm not into having to go through the hassle of shipping my unit back and forth possibly multiple times in the hopes of eventually getting a product that will work.
So, what's the story? Is this problem ongoing? If I order one will it be a total crapshoot as to whether it will work out of the box or not?

I would guess that most of the people who got dead units posted on the forums. This is common, people with working ones do not post about it. I know there are a lot of people out there that have working units that last a long time. You wont hear about the ones that work, only the ones that dont, so it may form a biased opinion.

b sho... i just ordered my 2nd neuros, an 80GB NII (the ones on closeout)... i've had it about a month and it developed the EXACT same problems my original (30GB) neuros had... it was almost like clockwork. i've had my 30GB for about 2 years now, and when i first got it i had to send it back to support 2 times. on the bright side, after recieving the 30GB back the 2nd time, support had completely fixed the problems and it works perfectly to this day.
just this week (almost the exact time period i had the 30GB before it choked) my 80GB developed the same problems, so now it looks as though i'll have to send it in just like my original one.
to be fair to these guys, the support people always seem willing to help and fix the problems, otherwise i would have NEVER considered getting a 2nd one. i think it is a bit of a crapshoot because i have friends who also bought them and they've worked fine since they've recieved them. also, the way i look at it is as long as support will fix it up, sending it away to be fixed is outweighed by the fact that when the NII works completely as described it is the best player i've owned.
cheers, here's to a speedy turnaround on my "new" 80GB [:I]
