I bought a backpack on ebay and they said it was a 20gb backpack. I go to settings and it says 1.979mb. This seems to be telling that it is a 2gb backpack.
Mem Free 1.979MB Mem. Sync 1.979MB Version 2.28.0137
Or is this telling that I only have 2gb of free space but the backpack is actually 20gb?

When I was a kid my mom used to tell me that curiosity killed the cat...What she forgot to tell me was that it also discovered the cat, invented the lightbulb, and forged the Neuros

That means that you have about 2GB left on the backpack. That means that there is in fact about 18GB of data on there. Just use the file manager for your OS (My Computer/Explorer in Windows) and check out the free music you got.
You can also use NeurosDBM to rebuild the database so you can listen to it all.
The backpack sizes for the Neuros HD USB1.1 (no USB port on the backpack) were 20GB and I think there was a limited 30GB version. The USB2.0 backpacks (has a USB port on the backpack) came in 20GB, 30GB, 60GB, and 80GB.
