Has anyone ever tried this.
Buying the 20GB backpack, taking the HD out, selling it, and buying an 80GB? (or something close to it)
If you have tried it, I have some questions.
What HD is it that the neuros uses (Please link)
How much did you buy the bare HD (Please link)
I would like to buy just the backpack case from anyone. lemme know

Dell has been running specials recently where this could be had for less than $100 (with coupons). If you watch the forums at anandtech.com and fatwallet.com these pop up every once in a while.

Hi there,
I have an old USB-1.1 Neuros with 20GB backpack. It does not work with the harddrive anymore ("Cant mount device"). I cannot send it in, since I live in germany. Therefore, I opened it and took out the harddrive, which is obviously broken. Before I buy a new one, I wanted to try it with an old 1.4 GB drive I have at home. I tried it with the instructions from cool4u2view.com (very good), but with no success. The drive works, I hear it coming up normally, but the neuros still says "Cant mount device". It then opens up the diagnostics menu and whatever I try there, fails. For formatting the device or the file system, I get an "Error 0xA860". I also tried to format the drive with FAT32 in advance (on my desktop), but still the same. Now my question:
Is the thing supposed to work with an 1.4 GB drive (Toshiba)?
Can I do anything in advance to the drive on my desktop to get it recognized?
I just would like to know if it makes sense to buy a new hdd or if there is something wrong with the neuros itself.
Any ideas?

Die Festplatte im Neuros ist grundsätzlich nie mit einem FAT32 beschrieben, sonder in einer Art Rohformat. Die Platine im Neuros setzt dieses in FAT32 um und gaukelt dem Rechner ein FAT32 Laufwerk vor.
Ich hatte ähnliche Probleme, und Deins scheint eher ein Platinenproblem.
Wenn Du magst, dann schicke mir die Festplatte von der Du denkst, sie sei kaputt und ich schaue, ob sie in meinem funktioniert.
Über wen hast Du den Neuros gekauft? Wenn Du ihn von Jeff hast, dann kannst Du sicher mit ihm eine Lösung finden, vielleicht, daß Du nur den Hinweg bezahlst, und er den Rückweg. Er ist da ziemlich easy drauf und hilft Dir gerne.
Aber tatsächlich ist das ganze wahrscheinlich ein Platinenproblem.

Thank you Matthias (I will write in English anyway, maybe somebody else jumps in with a good idea).
The fact that the neuros HD is NOT formatted FAT32 was a first hint, so I have to try something else. The original HD is definitely broken, I can hear it trying to speed up, making strange noise, and then shutting down again, on the neuros AND on my desktop IDE. A friend of mine brought the neuros from the US, so "Jeff" is not an option. Since the HD is defect, I was hoping that I do not have a defect controller as well (for the reason that this would definitely be too much bad luck). So, can anybody tell me how I am supposed to format a new drive? The guy on cool4u2view.com somehow made it, I want to try it as well. He seems to format the drive under WIN through USB, when it is already installed in the neuros. He writes about getting into the neuros main menu and then do a "CHKDSK" from the dos box in windows. But how can I get to the main menu? Whenever I try, I get to the diagnostics menu, where I can do nothing -- and while I am in it, the neuros is not recognized over USB. If I exit it, the neuros tries to mount the HD, which brings me into diagnostics mode again.
Any more hints?
Anybody?

I solved the problem I had before (getting into the main menu with a new harddrive) by installing an older firmware (1.45) which would go to the main menu after a failure to initialize the HD. But I still cannot format the drive. The neuros is formatting it, but cannot initialize afterwards. If I try to format it from the windows console over USB with "format e:" (no matter if with /U or /f), I get "Filesystem type is RAW, please give filesystem type with /FS. If I do so ("/FS:FAT32") I get "volume is too small for FAT32", with "/FS:FAT" I get "volume is too big for FAT". If I try to format it by windows right click on the drive, it says its size is 512 Byte. I also tried to format it on linux, wont do it. I tried to erase all partitions first (connected via IDE to the desktop), connect it to the neuros, trying to format it with neuros and then chkdsk in windows or linux. I tried it _with_ a partition, no success.
I am running out of ideas ;-)

You could still ask Jeff if he is able to give you the opportunity to send it to the states and he will send it back to you after Neuros Inc repaired it. jeff@cool4u2view.com
Sadly Neuros Inc. usually doesn't ship to europe, even if it's a service-case. :(
But you can ask them as well. support@neurosaudio.com
Might you be able to find someone, maybe the friend who brought the Neuros, happen to have a Neuros near you.
Then you definitely would be able to test, if it's a problem with the HD or the Neuros itself.
I can offer you checking that, but since I study in Vienna, it will cost you couple of bucks shipping, which could possibly result in nothing.
And of course you would be in need of a good amount of trust!
I couldn't think of a solution.
Keep in mind, when you ship the device to the states, go to the customs _before_ you ship it and show it to them, saying you are shipping it for service-purpose the the US, otherwise they might want tax and stuff when it comes back from the States!

I've replaced the drives in Neuroses (or Neurosi) 4 times and never had to do anything but a format from diagnostic menu. I would try an fdisk and remove everything from the drive and then try formatting via the Neuros. If that doesn't work then you have a tough choice to make. What I'd do here in the US is buy a new drive and try it. If it didn't work, I'd just return it.

I have a 20GB Neuros with USB 1.1 and suffered a disk crash last week. I just successfully replaced the harddrive with the following Seagate 60GB Hard Drive from zipzoomfly:
Seagate Momentus 4200.2 ST960821A 60G Ultra ATA/100 4200RPM Mobile Hard Drive from zipzoomfly. I paid $106 (including shipping and tax) for the 60G drive. The process for self install took about 20 minutes and best of all, Neuros formatted the hard drive from its own firmware.
The only tools you need are a 6 and 10 Torx screwdriver. It is a really simple job. Follow the directions at http://www.cool4u2view.com/
Now, how does one replace the battery without sending the Neuros back to the factory? |

That's the same drive I have in both my Neuros players. As far as the battery...no dice. NA will not sell them. You have to send your unit back.

I remember seeing a post on these forums where someone had found the same battery form, but in a higher capacity, for sale. Unfortunately it was for sale in bulk, so quite expensive.

| We're getting off topic here but that posting found a 2000 or 2400 mah li-ion battery. The problem is that it doesn't have the pcb for sale. I think the pcb is a voltage regulator. |

it seems the system files are stored on the brain, so all you have to do is 1+5+Play and do a format and the woid folders and stuff are put back on the HD then |
