I am looking for an Mp3 player.. Everyone around here has an Ipod from HP.. And I was just about to order myself one then remember the most awesome Neuros.. I am having a hard time deciding between these two guys.. Grrrr..
The only reason that I would even consider getting the Ipod is because of the Click-Wheel.. Other than that I would get the Neuros.. It is thirty timees better than anything out there on the market..
But how is the navigation on the Neuros..? Can you scroll through playlists and such pretty easily..? Also, is the software good..? I read in the forums somewhere that you cant navigate while listening to a song..? Hmmm thats a major downfall.. lol..
Replies are welcomed, thank you..
P.S. Can somebody point me to some reviews about them..?
I am looking at the Neuros 40GB Version..
Hey.. Wow..? |

I've had mine for a year or more. It's been durable & dependable for 10 hours a day almost every day (with augmented battery, see Tip/Trick post). It's been dropped, kicked, rained on, exposed to extreme dust (augmented cover with plastic cover).
Navigate by choosing or randomizing: Artist/SongName/Album/Playlist/OnTheFlyPlaylist/Genre Very Functional and easy. Random is somewhat less than random, but I have no complaints.
Volume Leveling is non existant (which is lame). FM reception is horrible. FM broadcast (MiFi/NeuroCast) is acceptable for the most part. Some vehicles are fine, some have static (Neuros 1 is what I refer to), but it is good for the most part. Loading music into it is a royal pain, but I don't do it often so I don't care.
These comments are just from memory and I'm no expert. But I would buy it again for sure
Oh, I Forgot....yeah you can navigate while listening, they fixed that

Loading music onto the Neuros can be a pain if you use the Neuros Sync Manager (NSM) provided with the Neuros (slow and cumbersome). However, there are two other free sync managers that others use and are very happy with. I am currently using NDBM (Neuros Database Manipulator), which I have been very happy with. It is much faster than NSM and allows you to put the files on the Neuros using either the NDBM GUI or Windows Explorer. Then you can use NDBM to create the database on the Neuros.
Others use Sorune. I have not tried that one yet, because it won't sort while ignoring "The" in the first word of a title. Although I hear that feature is in the works.
I have both the Neuros I and Neuros II and am very happy with them. I was one of the ones who had to return two Neuros II's before I got a working one. But even with that inconvenience, I am very happy. Tech support was awesome. They paid for all the shipping costs, provided shipping labels, and handled the whole thing in less than two weeks, and did it all with a smile (at least they sounded like they were smiling ).
The NueroCast (or MyFi by its old name: FM transmission) works fairly well in my car. I live in a major city, so there aren't many frequencies available. I get some interference no matter where I am on the dial. But once I get out into more rural areas, it works great.
Depending on your time frame, there is rumor out there that the Neuros III may be out late this year. No real details known. Rumors are that it will be a smaller single piece unit and will use the smaller hard drives.
Mine has been dropped a couple of times without any problems.
The size of the Neuros II doesn't really bother me. Especially since I don't have to carry around a separate FM transmitter or line input adapter, it's all built in. I normally put it on my desk or on my car seat.
The poor FM reception doesn't bother me either, since if I listen to the radio, it's usually in the car, which already has a good FM radio.
Battery replacement is inexpensive. You send the unit into Neuros and they will replace them for you, for a very reasonable cost (less than $20 I think). As compared to battery replacement on an iPOD, which is very expensive. If your are really handy, you can even replace the batteries yourself (voiding the warranty of course )
I'm not sure if they are still doing this, but they used to have a 30-day money back guarantee.
Hope this helps...

yes, that is in the works for Sorune, and i do recommend not using NSM since it is very slow and for me used to just crash randomly (but that was a while ago, so it might be a bit better now). i really dont think that the click wheel is that great and it really does annoy me. the times that i have used the ipod the wheel is either too sensitive or it sometimes just doesnt scroll when i tried to... the neuros has many more (and better) features than the ipod has and the features will continue to grow thanks to open source firmware and sync manager. with the neuros the possibilities are technically endless.

Personally, that's my only problem with Sorune, as well. Also, I'd like a feature to just simply add songs to the database - I want to copy them over myself, because I have them sorted album/artist/songs, but if I could just browse to the folder and click "add to database", which would likely take only a few seconds, that would be great.
Or is this already possible?

you can just add songs to the neuros and then in a command prompt type "sorune --rebuild --sync" and if you are using linux you could probably program a script to do that for you. that just makes it an easy way to drag and drop without having to open up the gui.

just talked to Darren (the Sorune creator) and he added in a right-click option thats adds music to the database. the will be in version 0.5 which should be coming out soon.

Excellent. All I want is just a feature in sorune to add them to the database... so I could load on my new... say... Peter Gabriel album to F:\music\Peter Gabriel\UP , and then scroll to that folder in Sorune and click "Add to Database", which would quickly add it to the database in a few seconds, then be done... and that's it.
Sure, the rebuild function works very well at the moment (far faster than NDBM), but it still takes about a minute and a half, so being able to cut out that extra minute would be nice.

Just creating the database takes 1.5 minutes? Meaning that if you have all your files transferred and you click Sync, it takes 1.5 minutes? That seems like an awfully long time unless you have a larger (say 60GB or 80GB) N1 and it's full or you have a lot of playlists.
Sorune doesn't create custom directories during sync. You should be able to use it to do the copy and the directory structure on your Neuros will be identical to your PC (even the file timestamps will be identical if that's important to you). Just be sure to set your "Music Home" so that portion of the tree will be extracted from the Neuros location. See the help screen for more info. |

Navigation is easy on the Neuros.
You can browse through your songs while playing. That fix was implemented a awhile back.
While using Ncast (Formally Mifi ) the browsing is much slower then when using headphones

Well, honestly, the N2 is a very good player at the moment, and I can't wait until the N3. Besides, I think that NA will give us a discount or a deal on the N3 when it does come - hopefully the upgrade won't be more than $100 or so. I would worship Joe Born if that happens.
I don't know if the backpack system will be carried over to the N3 - I personally hope not, because I find it near useless and it may add extra size to the unit.
If you do buy the 20 gig Neuros II, don't do it while planning to get another 20 gig or so later. The price difference between the 20 gig and 30 gig is a measly 10 dollars, and from 30GB to 40GB it's 40 dollars. However, getting a whole new 20 gig backpack after the fact will be significantly more expensive.
Honestly, I think the N3 will be a HUGE improvement. If size and battery life (Neuros II has mediocre battery life) aren't a problem, by all means, go for it. But if you think you can wait until July or so, then do that.

| Or, It's EASy to upgrade the HDrive yourself. I bought a 20 and stuck an 80 in later. Took about 3 minutes. |

Where did you hear that from?
I think if you would like to buy a player and don't mind to much about size, you should buy the NII, now, since the release of the NIII is not certain and could still be seven months away.
