black and white bug? - s-video versus composite

I just bought an S-VHS deck so I can transfer my old video tapes to .mp4 files using my OSD. I hooked an S-Video cable to the output of the VCR to the S-Video input of the OSD and swithced the input of the OSD to S-Video. I tried recording a sample clip to test it out and the image was in black and white. I plugged the S-Video cable from the VCR directly into the S-Video input of my TV and it was in color, I plugged it back into the OSD, black and white again... I then went into the OSD input menu to make sure it was still set to S-Video, it was. I switched it to composite and the image was in color (there was no RCA cable hooked to the RCA video out on the VCR). Is this a bug or something I just don't understand? I then recorded a test clip with the S-Video cable in use and the OSD set to composite in and everything seemed to work, but its a puzzler for me.

Did you check that the OSD is set up in NTSC or PAL (whichever is applicable)?
Your last sentence has confused me. You recorded S-video input correctly when the OSD was set to composite?

Yeah, I had the OSD set to "composite", had an S-Video cable plugged into the S-Video output of the VCR into the S-Video input of the OSD, there was no RCA cable plugged into the composite out of the VCR. I don't know how it worked, but it did.
As far as the PAL/NTSC option, I didn't change that setting at all.

What version of the firmware are you using? This is really odd!

To OSD, here there are issue:
S-video cable and composite-video cable can't plug in OSD at one time, so please do:
- Plug in s-video cable
- Pull out the composite-video cable (should be Yellow point ) but keep the audio cable in
- Set the OSD input parameter to S-video
