46  Neuros 442 Personal Media Player / Neuros 442 - Feedback and Discussion / Re: Firmware on: March 17, 2006, 05:28:47 AM
I think the bottom line is the current 442 hardware just does not have the power needed to handle all the additional tasks and capabilities that are being planned.
The New hardware platform is needed befor this open source project can go forward.
Its expected most owners will trade-in the current model for the upgrade so why waste resources attempting to make the current version do something the hardware can't really support.

The new interface and expanded features most have asked for are only going to be on the 442V2

Neuros discovered early on that the current 442 hardware would not really support the open source direction they wished to take.
They then decided to put there time and resources into a new hardware platform that would support open source rather than attempt to port linux to the current 442.

Neuros is offering reasonable priced upgrades to this new 442V2 when when it releases around early summer.

BTW, this thing was only $208 (sold out now though) so I'm really tempted to return the 442 if a new firmware doesn't come out soon.

I followed the link and didn't think The Mobinote 7010 looks anything like the 442 and it costs close to $650 USD to purchase.
49  Neuros 442 Personal Media Player / Neuros 442 - Feedback and Discussion / CloneDVD mobile on: February 26, 2006, 04:31:24 AM
Slysoft the maker of CloneDVD software has a new program for converting non-encrypted DVD's or DVD files to MP4 or DIVX files for playing on mobile devices like the Archos, sony PSP,Creative Vision,Video Ipod.
The program uses the encoding engine from the open source project FFmpeg.
I have been testing it out and have used the genric DIVX setting for converting files for use on my 442 and it has been working good.
The program is very easy to use and good for thoes that like simple solutions. Its $39 to purchase the program but Slysoft offers a free 21 day trial of all there products including this one if you would like to give it a try.

I would like to build a Media Center computer running MythTV.
Will it work with Sat TV?

The Neuros 442V2 will be using a New hardware platform with a different video processor chip set.
The firmware for the Version 2 will not work on the current version hardware.
52  Neuros 442 Personal Media Player / Neuros 442 - I need help! / Re: Want old firmware back!! on: February 10, 2006, 06:21:52 AM
Derek has a FTP site that had all the older versions of firmware.
It's not always up and you may have to try several different times.

I imported my cd collection using itunes, so most of my digital music is in M4a format.  When I put the music files into my 442 they don't show up under the audio player.  It doesn't say unsupportable or anything like that.  The folders are there, the files are not.  Under file management I can find the actual music files, but they still do not play.  Can this be fixed without converting my entire collection? If not, what is the best way to convert all of my files?

Thats not a supported Audio file on the 442.
The only audio formats currently supported are MP3/ADPCM/WMA/AAC-LC

Johan,
Thanks for the very detailed update.
Sounds very generous and mostly positive News with maybe the exception of the 4-5 week turn around on the upgrade.
I guess thats to be expected with the volume of units Neuros will have to process but how will we all survive without our 442 for 5 weeks.

That is true for the Archos AV500 that I have my eye currently on.
The AV400 however has a cable set for recording on the move as well as the docking station.

Oh, that's a real shame. Am I correct in assuming that this is true for The Recorder 2 also? I know this isn't the correct forum for that question, but hopefully someone might know that also.

The battery problem with the 442 is a known bug that neuros said they were working on. It didn't however get fixed in the recent firmware update and Neuros has not said what the timetable is for when this will be fixed.
I don't have a Recorder 2
57  Neuros 442 Personal Media Player / Neuros 442 - Feedback and Discussion / Re: Neuros 442 for Recreational video recording on: December 16, 2005, 07:49:25 PM
Forget it, the 442 will not record on battery power even with 3/4 of a full charge.
It shuts down claiming the battery is low on power.

Wasn't the $70 rebate offer only good for thoes that purchased during the original Woot Gamma Luanch a couple months ago?
I know there was another rebate offer that only applied if you purchased a recorder and 442 combo.
59  Neuros 442 Personal Media Player / Neuros 442 - I need help! / Re: mp4 video longer than 1 hour doesn't play on: November 07, 2005, 07:26:22 PM
I reported a issue on Bugzilla in the past where I found MP4 files over 1 GB show as unsupported and would no play on the 442.
MP4 files under 1 GB can be read and play fine on the 442.

I don't think your posts are seen as bashing the 442.
Critical feedback of the unit is needed for future 442 improvements and Im pretty sure thats what Neuros is looking for from the Gamma Program.
