I have been recording a collection VHS tapes under the 2.0 firmware. While the audio can be heard, the volume is very low. With the volume settings on my laptop maxed out, I have to turn off all other sources of noise. The laptop right in front of me cannot be made loud enough to overcome other noises.

Robert-
The volume is basically set at the source. If the volume of the source is low, the recording will be low as well. There is no amplification during a recording (it leads to distortions). You will see that if you record from a clear channel, the volume of your recording will be much louder.
