This hidden mode will allow you to adjust your MyFi volume:
From the Songs menu do the following key combination: down, rewind, ffwd, up, down. That will turn on the feature and doing that again will turn the feature off. The only way to know if the feature is on or not is during MyFi. The broadcast frequency will be followed by a (gain) representing the gain of the audio. To adjust, use Preset 1 and Preset 5 to go up/down by 3dB, respectively. Preset 3 sets the gain to nominal. Preset 2, Preset 4 increase/decrease gain by 1dB. Maximum gain is 12dB, minimum gain is -6dB. We should mention that since there is such a huge variation from song to song, it is impossible, without a more advanced feature such as volume leveling, to have every song set to optimum. If your songs start distorting, back down on the gain a little. This feature will not save the volume you have selected when you get out of this mode and will need to be reset every time the Neuros is restarted.

Okie doke ... I got around to putting 1.34 back on my machine and testing this feature.
From what I can see, it only affects the volume level, not the actual signal strength. While that can help reduce the appearance of static by masking it to some degree, it doesn't do anything to actually improve the signal.
In other words, it helps overcome the static inherent in the MyFi process, but it doesn't help if you are having trouble finding a clear station to lock on to.
It is the signal strength most (or at least I) have been asking for when we ask for "louder" or "stronger" MyFi.
I would love to see some way of boosting the MyFi strength so that I can get as strong a signal when there are no RF cables (or headphones, or power) as when I have everything all plugged in. I'm willing to live with the extra battery drain.
BTW Tim, I'm not saying your tip isn't helpful, I just don't think it covers as many of the requests as the multitude of crossposts had made me hope for ;)

Also, it would be much more useful if this feature would stay on through power offs. Unlike my TiVo, which rarely gets powered off, having to enter secret codes on my Neuros every time it is powered up is a pain.
I know, it's a hidden feature, but I think it should be moved to a static option under the MyFi menu. I definitely see it's value. |

You're absolutely correct, but I think the most important benefit of this feature is that the "volume" coming out of your speakers can be made to equal the "volume" of the other radio stations on the dial. That way, there's not that HUGE volume jump when you turn your Neuros off and listen to the radio. |

Cool....I thought it was strange that the increased volume from 1.30 was removed....silly me you just improved it.
The volume gain sould be in the release notes for v1.34.
Thanks for the tip! Bryan |

I just tried to install the 1.34 upgrade, but couldn't get it to respond in the fashion spelled out in the release notes.
It worked OK through item 7, but never went from USB active to U SB idle. I took the instructions literally and copied the "firmware" directory (and its contents, the file named woid.hex) to the removable drive (g on my computer).
The directory tree now has 6 subdirectories including firmware, music, Woid_db, WOID_HISI, WOID_RECORD, and WOID_SYNC.
Did I do something wrong?
Thanks, Dean Park |

Use the follwing advice at your own risk... You did nothing wrong ...just close the folder wait about ohh 10 seconds disconnect the cable (yes do it anyway) and follow the instructions.
For some reason mine never went to idle either but I ignored it because I knew my transfer was complete and nothing else was being done on the drive. In my opinion it is perfectly safe if you know it is done with everything else. Again I say do this at your own risk because everyones computer is different and if you run such apps like virus scanners etc it may in fact be reading your drive.

Thanks, it worked. The MyFi volume boost is sooo much better. I hope a more convenient way to access it is available soon.

| Can we get the the WIFI gain added to the WIFI menu, instend of having it hinden behind a funky set up keys? As it stands on I feel like I am using a cheat code on a game, or a hack. I would like a more refined Fireware. |

I am back to ask that once we put the neuros into the gain mode is holds the setting. I often switch from MyFi to headphones and back. It would be nice to "set it and forget it".....

I'd say something like that would be best implemented when we get bookmarking features.

This is a great feature, and I very much wish it were somehow available during normal use, without having to know secret codes. I hope that this will make the menus sometime soon.
I also would like it to go just a touch higher, if possible, so that it would match the levels of normal radio bands, but it is much, much better now. Instead of being completely inaudible, it's just a little quiet, and changing from one to the other isn't jarring.
Thank you for putting this in! |

The only thing that would suck about having this on permanently is that you can't use the presets while it's active.
It would be nice to have a way to turn it on and off through the Xi menu though.
Edit: I got to thinking a bit more about this and it might be a good tradeoff to have an option that toggles what happens when you hold down a preset button between setting a preset and adjusting the gain.
i.e.: Settings \ Presets \ Hold Function: - Set Preset - Adjust Gain
and the preset list could still be available in another menu choice: Settings \ Presets \ List Presets

Just got my Neuros 128 MB/20 GB combo yesterday, everything's gone pretty smoothly so far except buy.com didn't send me the car power adaptor. Oh well.
So the firmware (1.38) and software (1.28) are all pretty up-to-date. Any reason the down-RR-FF-up-down sequence shouldn't work for me? It works in FM mode to show what I think is battery voltage but doesn't work in play mode to allow me to boost MyFi volume. I'm not seeing anything that looks like "gain" following the broadcast frequency. Am I missing something?
Thanks |

Thanks - I guess I didn't make myself clear, but what I meant to say was that I tried the sequence both in the song menu and while a song was playing, but no gain indicators appeared.
In FM Radio mode the same key sequence shows you battery voltage, I was just pointing out that the sequence works as intended in one mode but not in another.

it took me a few attempts to get it, but while playing a song, do the sequence and you'll see a "(0)" next to the MyFi frequency. Once you see that, start pressing up or down on the presets. :) |

| Just to add, you can hit this sequence a second time to get out of it to use your presets, but once you stop playing a song, the volume gain is lost. But as long as you're playing songs, I believe the gain stays. |

| The gain will stay as long as you dont turn the Neuros off. So you can stop a song and go to another one and you wont loose the volume. |
