sorry for my ignorance but this is what you use in lieu of samba (for playing video files on the OSD that are stored on your windows box)?  Is that right?

it's worth noting that when Kelly says "fixed later," she really means we're working on fixing this right now.  It's just kind of a literal translation from Chinese that implies something different in English.

I don't beleve "comment no 3" you cited above is relevant to the production unit.  I find it inconceivable that 64MB is not adequate for any kind of playback.  It's something like 4x what the R2 had and it played back 2mbps divx just fine.

The production OSD has replaced the development board.  Even our internal team just uses the OSD itself now.  It has serial and ethernet and you can even solder a JTAG header if you really need it.

Thanks for the original feedback.  It's great to hear someone actually articulate what they were thinking when they bought the device, then set it up, and now waiting for updates.  Most of all I'm delighted that you still feel good about the purchase, and I beleive you are right with the comparision to iTV and that we must keep the ease of use front and center in our focus (once the basic stuff is working-which is not quite yet)

In any case, to answer your original question, all the bounty code should be GPL 2.0, so it'll be freely distributable to everyone.  If someone wants to do a proprietary app on linux, then they can do what they want with it as far as licensing and fees, etc.  Neuros likely won't pay for such development, and they can't use GPL code, etc. but otherwise there's nothing stopping folks from that.  You can find more information here http://open.neurosaudio.com/node/217

So telnet is already working (thtough it sounds like that's not what you want) and work is underway on a variety of other "remote control" mechanisms, most notably an http server, there's some information about that http://open.neurosaudio.com/node/614 and elsewhere on open.neurostechnology.com

actually MPEG-4 is a general term referring to essentially a category of file types, these codecs can be found in a variety of wrappers (file extensions) .avi, asf, .mp4. Actually windows media is another codec and file wrapper all together.  It's essentially an alternative to mpeg-4.  I know this isn't much help, but unfortunately, the video stuff is a real mess, it's like a three dimensional matrix of video codec, audio codec and wrapper.  Unfortunately your device has to be able to read the three way combination of whatever media you have or it won't work.  Not only that, but as the previous poster suggests, bitrate and resolution can choke some devices too if they are not correct. You really need to download the samples that are on the site and see if it plays (unless of course we list it in which case it's been confirmed to work). 

Well atleast now I know others are also haveing the same issue.
The only response I received from Tech support was load the latest firmware. I replied that I did this 3 days ago and have not heard back from them.
Because it keeps rebooting I can't do anything with it.
It looks like the no questions asked return policy is only good for 90 days on the OSD?
This is turning out to be a bigger disaster than the 442, Atleast the 442 actually worked for 90% of what was advertised.

JEFFH, if you've already tried updating the firmware and that didn't solve it, we should try swapping out your unit, at a minimum so we can look at it.  I have customer service contact you here, or you can write them at support (at) neurostechnology.com

Sean, were you able to duplicate the rebooting on that other returned unit I gave you?  Do we know what the cause was yet?

Certainly can understand that, but if you can stick it out a little longer your feedback is really valuable to us.  If you are finding things that still don't work with the latest firmware, please please let us know, it really is valuable feedback and I'm sure we can come up with some incentive to make it worth your time.

no subtitle support yet either.  Actually, this is pretty important feature to me too, I put a bug in on this, but it sounds like it needs to be split up and better articulated (divx subtitle support v. recording closed captioning, etc) anyone who knows this stuff, please help out http://bugzilla.neurostechnology.com

The OSD cannot read NTFS.  I couldn't even find an entry for it in bugzilla.  I know there are issues with NTFS and Linux for obvious reasons, but others with more knowledge should post here or start an entry in bugzilla.

Thanks.  We'll be on Amazon once the unit is out of Gamma, which hopefully will be soon, but is not there yet.

does it thave linux drivers?  that's the key.

unfortunately, none of us internally are working on the mac, but if you think it's a general question, I'm happy to ask around.

There is not zoom yet, but it's clearly needed.  It's been on my to-do list to articulate just how this should work considering there are different TV aspect ratios, etc.  If you have a clear idea of how this should work, please post either here or on bugzilla and we can discuss and then implement.  Anyway, it'll remain on my to-do list if not, and I will take care of it eventually.
