31  Neuros OSD / Neuros OSD - Feedback & Discussion / Re: Powerful enough for H.264/MPEG4-AVC realtime encoding?! on: September 22, 2006, 12:57:48 AM
no, the next generation chipset is needed for that, this one does standard MPEG-4
32  Neuros OSD / Neuros OSD - Feedback & Discussion / Re: OSD capability on: September 22, 2006, 12:56:43 AM
The OSD doesn't have the two hour problem.  It might have an 8 hour problem, but it should be at least 8-12 hours of continues recording before it has an inherent isssue, and remember, we're limited by FAT32 on 2GB files, so over 2GB will have to be split anyway
33  Neuros OSD / Neuros OSD - Feedback & Discussion / Re: MythTV on: September 21, 2006, 02:23:20 AM
myth is quite a beast for an embedded device, but I'll be posting to open.neurostechnology.com on this subject shortly.
34  Neuros OSD / Neuros OSD - Feedback & Discussion / Re: subscription music services on: September 21, 2006, 02:22:23 AM
You can use modules to separate out some of these things.  Much to the chagrin of some members of the community, I suspect we'll have no choice but to support DRM music services at some point.  We have all the material we need and the hardware is setup with the requirements to support it.  We haven't pulled the trigger yet, partially because we just haven't had the time and second because it continues to be a controversial issue.  In general we're quite anti-DRM, but I do believe we're going to have to be pragmatic eventually, and of course make sure we haven't crippled the devices in any way in accepting DRM files...
35  Neuros OSD / Neuros OSD - Feedback & Discussion / Re: Use as Media Gateway on: September 21, 2006, 02:18:09 AM
This will absolutely be a primary use of the device for many folks.  The OSD can already do this with Linux shares, but not yet windows (SMB) shares, I'd expect it's at least a good month or more out though.  We're still fixing basic stuff right now.
36  Neuros OSD / Neuros OSD - Feedback & Discussion / Re: What video codecs are available? on: September 21, 2006, 02:16:12 AM
What is RAW?  I haven't heard of it, so I doubt its supported, do you have a link for it so we can look into it?
37  Neuros 442 Personal Media Player / Neuros 442 - Feedback and Discussion / Re: Firmware on: September 18, 2006, 11:42:08 PM
[
True.  Actually, most of us wouldn't have bought one if we knew then what we  know now.  Lesson learned.

For those that upgrade to the 442v2 when it comes out, don't be surprised if there are similarly few, if any, firmware upgrades.

Clearly people are upset that we failed to deliver a 442v2 in  a timely basis, and for that I won't make any excuses.  You have every right to be dissapointed, we did fail you there.

However I have to respond regarding the implication that it was marketing hype and we deliberately deceived you.  We did say at the time of the woot sale that we were planning a hardware upgrade to an open source version that would evolve, etc.  We put in place an upgrade program to new hardware(instead of investing effort in trying to evolve a closed source product), and we have extended the no questions asked return policy so that you can decide when the 442v2 comes out if you still want it.  At that point you'll have had use of the 442v1 for over a year and you'll be able to return it for a full refund.  As far as I know, there's not a single incident of a customer returning a product that's been given a hard time about the condition of the device, missing packaging, etc.  As promised, it is a no-questions asked return.

We did fail you in terms of delivering the 442v2 when we expected, and for that we truly are sorry.  Trying to keep all the buyers whole has been a costly exercise for us.  I can promise you it was not something we did deliberately.
38  Neuros OSD / Neuros OSD - Feedback & Discussion / OSD Giveaway Contest on: September 16, 2006, 02:35:38 PM

freeculture is having a neat contest:  create an anti-DRM home video, and the top FIVE videos will all win a free OSD.  I'm not sure how many submissions they'll get, but I think your odds are pretty good.

please digg their article here http://digg.com/videos_educational/Make_an_Anti_DRM_Video_and_Win_a_Neuros_Portable_DVR_from_FreeCulture_org

39  Neuros World / Joe's Corner / Re: New forum section ? on: September 15, 2006, 10:15:29 PM
I'm not staunchly opposed to adding new sections and I certainly see your point here.  As you probably know, we just migrated from forums that were a complete mess and one of the big conclusions was that too many forum sections were one contributor.  Even in your post, an issue is revealed.  Power issues are pertinent to both the R2 and the OSD.  Which section does it go in?

Honestly, my first choice would be to add to the wiki FAQ (or some other pages) and link to them for a sticky post there.  Its totally permissible (encouraged even) for you guys to advertise products there or link to outside websites.  Can we try this first before creating a new category?
40  Neuros OSD / Neuros OSD - Feedback & Discussion / Re: Interested in learning embedded programming (on the OSD)? on: September 13, 2006, 01:33:25 PM
Don't forget to attend Thursday nights IRC meeting on hacking the OSD:  http://open.neurostechnology.com/node/554

you can attend simply by going to the website http://open.neurostechnology.com/cgiirc/

BTW, I'm going to put up a poll, are you all watching OdNT?  Do I need to cross post here?
42  Neuros OSD / Neuros OSD - Feedback & Discussion / Re: OSD capability on: September 11, 2006, 06:09:57 PM
What makes you think power consumption will be less with the OSD?  I'd assume it will be more.  It has a faster processor, more memory, etc.  Sean, can you chime in on power consumption.

Of course, we'll always be interested in hearing about features you want and trying to respond to our customers internally.  We don't view the community as a substitute for our own development work.

EDIT:

I should add that as far as a wish list, we actually have team members assigned to monitoring all the communications and making sure they make it into bugzilla (our central repository for bugs and enhancement requests).  At the same time, you are always free to enter and vote on bugs directly there:  bugzilla.neurostechnology.com this is the database that our internal and community developers share to prioritize work.
43  Neuros OSD / Neuros OSD - Feedback & Discussion / Re: OSD capability on: September 10, 2006, 04:51:18 PM
The OSD has plenty of features that would be of interest, I believe.  Serial can be used for a remote (or a variety of other things as well) as can USB Host.  Check out http://wiki.neurostechnology.com/index.php/OSD_Ideas for some general ideas.  It's an open platform in many ways, Linux, open application software, available schematics and hardware support, and obviously support from the manufacturer.
44  Neuros 442 Personal Media Player / Neuros 442 - Feedback and Discussion / What do you think of the 442v2 concept? on: September 10, 2006, 12:57:07 PM
There's been considerable discussion of the 442v2 on the google mailing list: http://groups.google.com/group/Neuros-DM320Hardware/browse_thread/thread/6facf691f3425068/4b6bbf616ce93f50?lnk=raot#4b6bbf616ce93f50

with some calling the 442v2 "already obsolete" and others maintaining its the greatest thing since sliced bread.  The most recent in the latter category said the below.  Please vote, we'd love to know what you think.

"The 442v2 is one of the most exciting products I've ever seen.  I've
been waiting with unbridled anticipation since I first heard of it,
following the blog and the groups weekly.  Portable AV recording and
playback at DVD quality?  Burr-brown ADC/DACs?  USB Host?  And it runs
Linux!!??  I'm by no means a gadget junkie - I own maybe 10 electronic
devices less than two years old.  And that's because I didn't waste my
money on disposable, locked-down, worthless crap built on a business
model of planned obsolescence.  I waited for the cream to rise to the
top, the hype to die down, and spent my money on well-built,
well-designed products.  And I have been and will continue to wait for
the 442v2.  PLEASE DO NOT EVER THINK OF NOT CARRYING THIS PRODUCT TO
FRUITION!!!  I will weep blood.  There is nothing that I have seen
approaching the plans for the 442v2 either built or planned at any
price."
45  Neuros World / Joe's Corner / Re: marketing... on: September 09, 2006, 04:49:06 PM
What I would suggest to anyone interested in this is that perhaps the easiest way to get started is for us to offer a student/faculty discount coupon.  It would give money to you, and also give a discount to anyone you turn on to Neuros.  It's also worth noting that we  already have an affiliate program setup, so anyone that wants to promote the Neuros on the web can do so with the following program that we've setup.  See http://www.neurosaudio.com/is/affiliate.asp
