I have tried really hard to be patient and keep the faith but Im getting frustrated with Neuros at this point.

I have been really surprised and disapointed by the lack of community and open and honest communication from Neuros to Gamma Testers on these Fourms.
Gamma testers have pleaded for information and updates yet nothing substantial has been forthcoming to date.
The sense of direction seems to be approaching a Failed experiment status from a Gamma testers perspective and still Neuros makes little or no effort to even attempt to turn this perception around.

Im not involved in the developer google group but do keep up by reading the latest posts and the focus has all moved to the OSD with little or no talk about the 442.
From the Reading of these areas i get the general sense of a disfunctional development project.

Not so much disfunctional as we just bit off more than we could chew and we're having trouble keeping up with our promises.  I'm scheduling an online meeting on the IRC channel (there's a web client on OdNT so you can all participate) and we'll post logs talking about our resources and such, and then I'll post something more helpful on the schedule after that.  The OSD has been slower than we expected and that's pushed everything back.

I also posted an update here http://open.neurostechnology.com/node/290 but you are definitely right, we have been extremely remiss in our communication on that, and I apologize.  One of the reasons is also a part of the solution.  As our website has grown, and the amount of content has grown considerably, it has become increasing disconnected.  Because the updates and such on open.neurostechnology.com are not making it to the home page, only a fraction of users are receiving it.  Further as there become more and more mediums for information, it's easier to have information "slip through the cracks" so to speak.  As a good example, I have not been nearly as involved in the forums, lately and so much of that information has been getting lost.  It was actually Derek that directed me to this post.

So what's the solution, well we feel we need some tools to better integrate all the content that's available on Neuros and make sure it gets disseminated well.  Please take a look at http://wiki.neurostechnology.com/index.php/Website_Reorganization for some information on how we plan on correcting this.  And also some explanation on why some of us have not been spending more time on the forums.

Finally, we internally have been as frustrated as you at the pace of the 442v2 and are having considerable discussion about why that's happened and what can  be done about it.  Most of all what we can do to insure that future communications are more accurate.

It really does pain me to dissapoint you guys.  As you know, I take this stuff very personally.  I also recognize that many of you would feel "abandon," and believe me, that factored very heavily into our thinking.  There was an enormous amount of thought and discussion (more of which should have been online but it just happened to be in-person meetings, etc).

In a nutshell, all of us agree that there continues to be a great unserved area of the market for the N3.  And the MP3 market is absolutely massive.  The real trouble is that the standard for success is really "masterpiece." The iPod is on Gen 5 now and they've squeezed every cubic millimeter out of the thing, not to mention the effort that's gone into the firmware and software (and iTMS).

None of that is said to mean that we can't compete.  We're all firm beilevers that we can.  There's a good chunk of users that just want drag and drop and to eliminate iTunes altogether, a good chunk don't want to iTMS either, etc. etc.  There's no question that we don't need (or want) to duplicate what Apple (or the rest of the market) is doing.  At the same time, we do need to have parity with them on a lot of areas and that's simply not something we currently have the resources to do.  The Recorder and 442 are growing our business and allowing us to add those resources.  The 442 was just a lot easier to develop because we're using the housing and mechanical that the factory had already built.  Again, that housing is solid and high quality and adequate, but hardly the masterpiece level required for the N3.

It's painful, and more painful for me than anyone, I can promise that, but I do believe it's the right thing to do.  I won't say there aren't other alternatives, there are, but overall I believe this is the right choice.

79  Neuros World / Joe's Corner / Now you can buy worthless junk!!! on: June 20, 2006, 06:26:13 PM
we're having a series of "worthless junk for the EFF" auctions on eBay.  You can read about it on OdNT

http://open.neurostechnology.com/node/276

Basically we're selling samples and prototypes, etc and donating the proceeds to the Electonic Frontier Foundation (eff.org)

I appoligize for being out of touch on this.  I don't mean to blow you guys off (although I realize that's inadvertantly what I've been doing).  Internally we are trying to decide this very issue.  We are growing our team, both in the US and China to be able to do more products, but at this point, we're still stretched pretty thin.  We keep pushing off the N3 project and even the 442v2 to focus on the R3.  I realize that's not much consolation to the folks on this thread, but it's only fair to give you an honest assesment of the situation.

Like all of you, as a user, I long for an N3 myself, and I wish I had a better assesment of the schedule at this point, my best guess is that we're looking at mid '07 now.  In the meantime, I will get more information to you regarding the 442v2, which except for the size, could be an excellent solution for most of you (which BTW, will have .wav recording)

Mossberg had an article that really stirred things up.

I don't agree with him, but it's worth reading

my blog on it is here http://open.neurostechnology.com/node/241

h.264 encoding is probably not possible with this hardware, we are looking at it though

In regards to the wish that h.264 should have been incorporated into this.. does this unit even have the capability to encode to that format with just a firmware upgrade? this is a question theat I think the Neuros team would need to answer.
Any answer guys?

We've encouraged engineering to communicate directly with users (as noted we couldn't prevent it even if we wanted).  Discussion here may not be official, but hopefully it's still helpful nonetheless.  If you want to try out the new firmware and help with testing, send my an email (jborn at neurostechnology dot com)

north,

Thanks for the update, it would have been nice if someone from Neuros would have actually conveyed this information to its customers.

What about the 442v2?  I realize it's a "PMP" but it's also a great audio player (albeit big).  It's got huge capacity and 96khz/24 bit audio, great recording capability, etc.  Is it the physical size of the device that's not allowing it to be a consideration, or just the marketing?

Keith suspected that you were not getting his emails.  Can you please send me an email, I'll forward you what he forwarded me?

jborn at neurostechnology... is my email address, thanks.

Herethere:

Have you received communications from Keith?  He says he's sent multiple messages to you, but maybe you haven't received them.

I should make it clear here, that Keith (Americantechpushers.com) is a very conscientious re-seller.  He's had virtually no dissatisfied customers, and this is really an anomaly.  I continue to feel very comfortable endorsing Keith, as he has a long track record of taking care of customers.

Of course, my goal is to have *no* dissatisfied customers (I take this stuff very personally).

Anyway, herethere, If you haven't received messages from Keith, let's start there.

Keith, I obviously don't know the details of this issue or just what's going on, but I got involved because it seems like we're not communicating with him.  When he says that he's received no communication from any of us, it's concerning.  Especially after Tim's comment above implies that we're going to take care of it.

Unbelievable!  I don't know what our problem is here.  If we don't have this resolved next week, I'll write you a check personally.

I really am deeply, horribly sorry about this.  I got several folks involved in this months ago and I really though it had been taken care of.  Now I don't know what to think.

Wow, that's awesome!  I've been meaning to get a MythTV box setup, but haven't been able to do it yet.  Can you give any details of what you're doing with the script to get files that play on the 442?  I'd love to hear more about your setup, would you mind coming on the #neuros IRC channel on freenode sometime to tell us about your setup?
